The Martian: Differences between Book and Movie

First let me say that the movie is very true to the book.  I saw the movie, read the book, then saw the movie again.  The first time I saw the movie, Mark said something that didn't make sense to me.  He said "If the Hab breaches, I'll just kind of implode" but in the book he says "explode" which is correct.  I don't know why they changed that word making it less scientifically accurate.  The pressure would suddenly drop and he'd essentially get a bad case of the bends.  Air bubbles would form in the small blood vessels of his brain and he'd essentially have a stroke and die.  With gases expanding in his body due to the low pressure, explode is more accurate while implode is just inaccurate.

In the movie, one rover is destroyed in the storm so he only has one rover but in the book he's got two rovers the whole time.

In the book, Mark is a botanist and mechanical engineer. They only mention he's a botanist in the movie.

In the book Venkat Kapoor is a Hindi Indian but in the movie he's named Vincent Kapoor and is black.

In the book, when Mark is told to watch his language because the world is watching, he types "Look! A pair of boobs! -> (.Y.)".  In the movie, we only see the reaction and Teddy must apologize to the president and says "he didn't mean it.  He's under a lot of stress."

In the book, Mark uses a spare space suit to hold water.  We don't see that in the movie.

In the book, Mark uses every surface possible for his farm in the Hab.  In the movie, he just utilizes one room.

In the book, Mark injures his back carrying rocks so he builds a hot tub to soak.  This does not happen in the movie.

In the book, he never finds the communication dish that hit him, which is why he can't communicate with NASA.  In the movie, it's right next to him in the sand and yet he never tries to repair it.

In the book, Mark listens to Johanssen's Beatles collection but in the movie, all he has is disco from Commander Lewis.

In the movie, he cuts a hole in the roof of his rover but they never make it clear why he did that.  In the book he does it to make room for some equipment he requires on the trip.  In the movie, NASA and Mark both jump on the drilled out section and fall into the rover cabin.  He doesn't do that in the book.  Instead NASA has him file out the plastic between the holes.

When airlock 1 breaches in the book, the glass on his helmet shatters.  In the movie, it only cracks with a small hole which he tapes up with duct tape.  The book also goes into detail why and how the airlock fails.  The movie provides no explanation.

Although his crop dies in the movie, in the book, we later learn that some of the bacteria survived and that he could create a new crop if he wants, but never does.

In the book, it's discussed if the rescue ship fails to get the re-supply, then all members would take a suicide pill except for the smallest member.  The dead crew members would be put into cold storage and she would feed on them if necessary.  Better to have one member return alive than none.  Mark would not be rescued either.

In the book, Mark creates a bedroom he can attach to the airlock of the rover so he has more room to stand and stretch during the long trip to the MAV.  This is never mentioned in the movie.

In the book, he accidentally shorts out Pathfinder, destroying his ability to communicate with NASA until he reaches the MAV.  His journey to the MAV is far longer than shown in the movie and he has to drive around a dust storm and accidentally rolls the rover and the rover his towing, referred as the trailer.  He's OK and has to roll them back on their wheels and keep going. None of that is in the movie.

In the movie, Mark removes all the dirt from the Hab but in the movie, he just leaves it there.

In the book, he has to use most of his water supply and start saving his urine so they can turn it into more fuel.  He removes the nose of the ship and covers it with canvas and it tears away.  In the movie, it tears away completely.  It the book, it just tears.  In the book, it's more clear that this threw off the aerodynamics and made the lift-off sluggish, which is why his orbit isn't high enough.

In the movie, Mark is approaching the MAV in his rover and talks about being the fastest man in space.  He mentions how he likes that but don't tell NASA that.  He doesn't say this in the book.

In the movie, they blow a hole in the outer airlock door on the Hermes but in the book, they open the outer airlock and blow a hole in the inner airlock door so the air exits uniformly.

In the movie, Mark pierces his glove in order to fly like Iron Man to get rescued since the tether came up short.  In the book, the tether is long enough and Mark is clipped to his rescuer and pulled to safety by the tether.  Mark does suggest the Iron Man maneuver in the book but never does it.

In the movie, Mark turns off his mic so nobody hears him scream from the pain of his broken ribs.  He then says "It's true, you know. In space, no one can hear you scream like a little girl".

In the movie, they show Mark back on Earth teaching a course at NASA, Beck and Johanssen have a baby and Rick Martinez gets to pilot another mission.  The book ends shortly after he's rescued.  He's checked out by the doctor, has two broken ribs and has some final thoughts about how it's in our nature to rescue each other, then comments on how bad he smells and says it's the happiest day of his life.  End of book.

This isn't all the differences of course.  Just the main ones I could remember.

2014 SciFi Movies I Want to See

According to imdb.com on Dec 26. 2013, there are 893 SciFi movies coming out in 2014!  I know from my blog post 267 SciFi movies in 2013 that most of those are like 10% SciFi meaning they are mostly some other genre like fantasy, horror, action, drama, family, crime, etc.  That blog post only listed the movies that were mostly SciFi.  I also know from my evaluation of those 267 movies at the end of 2013 that 80% of those will not actually be released that year.  So when I look at my blog post showing how many SciFi movies come out each year, I know those numbers are misleading.  The true number of SciFi movies that are released into theaters (not those made for TV, Hulu, Amazon, NetFlix, etc) not including limited releases and only including those released in the US totals about maybe 15.

I used imdb Advanced Title search and filtered with these parameters:

Year: 2014
Genre: SciFi
Type: Featured Film
Country: United States
Language: English
Production Status: Released, Completed, Post-Production, Filming, Pre-Production

Results: 198

Below I only list the movies that I consider to be mostly SciFi that I want to see.  The movies that I do not include are:

  4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Survivors of the simian plague trigger an all-out war between humanity and Caesar's growing forces.

  16. Gods and Robots - Ricky, a time-traveling robot from the future who has journeyed to the year 1983 to find the source of artificial intelligence. That source, Ricky believes, is the robot god. Their new cure has proved even worse than the diseases they created: Santo lobbied and was given the right to make genetic enhancements to humans so they could again eat and survive on their created super foods. In that legislation, it also gave them the rights to own any human's DNA and body that was modified. For those modified that were less then perfect, Santo had the right to recall. We follow Max, a working class family man who convinced his wife to allow Santo to genetically modify her so that they can overcome their infertility problems. When their daughter is born disabled, however, Santo recalls her and sends her to Deconstruction Camp. His wife disowns him. His daughter is dead. He is alone. Now he must save the life of another child that has been recalled if he is to expose the inequities and injustices of Santo to the world.

How many SciFi movies come out each year?

I noticed an interesting trend on imdb.com.  The number of SciFi movies is steadily increasing with each decade.  It may go up and down year after year but the trend is definitely more SciFi movies per year on the average.  The snap-shot below was taken Dec 28, 2013.

Review of SciFi movies in 2013

6 months ago I made a list of most SciFi movies listed in imdb for 2013.  They listed 483 movies!  My list only has 267 movies since I only listed those that were mostly SciFi.  You can see that list here.  The list below is the same list but without the descriptions.

I only saw these 14 movies from my list of 267.  Actually that number is 13 because Riley Rewind is a series, not a movie.

  1. After Earth - Will Smith and his son crash land on the planet where humans used to live ... Earth.  The struggle to survive depends on his sons ability to fight fear.  I liked it.
  2. Elysium - The gap between rich and poor has grown too large. The rich live on a luxury Eden in space where technology cures sickness and injury.  Using exoskeleton technology, our hero becomes super-human but must still do battle with the super-human security soldiers.  Corrupt politicians must also be stopped.  I liked it.
  3. Ender's Game - Very true to the book.  Hopefully they'll make the 3 sequels too.  Amazing to see in IMAX 3D.  I loved it.
  4. Gravity - Sandra Bullock hits this one out of the park with an amazing performance that had my eyes watering all 3 times I saw it.  Amazing to see in IMAX 3D.  I loved it.
  5. The Host - Aliens have taken over 99% of human's bodies but some humans hide out and fight back.  One girl tries to kill herself to avoid getting a host but it happens anyway. Instead of her memories being erased, she shares the brain with her host and the two work together and join the rebellion against the aliens.  I liked it.
  6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Part 2 of the Hunger Games.  It felt like half a movie leaving a lot of things unresolved.  Still, it was very good.  I love the Hunger Games.  Looking forward to the rest.  I have not read the book.
  7. The Last Days on Mars - I watched this on iTunes.  They should have called it Zombies on Mars.  Good CG seemed like accurate depiction of living on Mars.
  8. Oblivion - I liked Tom Cruise in this movie where he discovers he's a clone being used by aliens to take the resources from Earth.
  9. Pacific Rim - Giant Robots fight Giant Monsters.  This movie channels the spirit of Japanese Godzilla movies but use modern CG.  I was quite impressed.  I saw a web site which explained why such robots would be impossible to create but set aside such disbelief and this is a fun ride.
  10. Riley Rewind - I watched the first five 10-minute episodes on YouTube. Directed by Ray William Johnson and stars the beautiful Anna Akana.  I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and fun of this show.  I'm looking forward to the rest.  I'm a sucker for time travel movies.
  11. Star Trek Into Darkness - Really good remake of the best Star Trek movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.  Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing as Kahn.  I'm a Trekker so I pretty much love all Star Trek movies ... except for parts V and VI.  Bleh.
  12. Upstream Color - Shane Carruth created my favorite time travel movie Primer.  Shane Carruth likes to create the whole movie outside of Hollywood meaning he writes, directs, produces, acts and does the music. His second movie has been greatly anticipated since Primer was such a big Indie hit.  Upstream Color was definitely not a Hollywood movie.  It's quite strange but I could still appreciate it's uniqueness.  That same could not be said for my wife and nephew who saw it with me.
  13. The World's End - A fun Simon Pegg movie about robot aliens taking over the world.  They definitely take this movie to extremes at the end where the world as we know it really does end.  Good stuff!
  14. World War Z - I was so blown away by the trailer for this movie that I read the book before it was released.  The Zombie genre has been reinvented so many times how can anyone do anything fresh?  Well they did.  These zombies don't want to eat you.  They simply want to infect you so you become a zombie.  Total infection happens in about a minute and you become really fast and strong which means the infection of most of the worlds population happens really fast.  Zombies have no interest in the terminally ill so all they have to do is make everyone terminally ill.  Yay!

These are the 2013 SciFi movies that were released that I still want to see.

  1. The Purge - Released 7 Jun 2013 imdb link.
  2. The Colony - Released 20 Sep 2013 imdb link.
  3. Europa Report - Release 27 Jun 2013 imdb link.
  4. Ghost in the Shell Arise - Border 1: Ghost Pain - (anime) Released 22 Jun 2013 imdb link.  Did not find it on NetFlix yet.  A prequel of the Ghost in the Shell series.
  5. The Mind Machine - (animated) 15 Jan 2013 imdb link.
  6. The Machine - Released 20 Apr 2013 imdb link.
  7. The Rise of the Robots - Released 20 Apr 2013 imdb link.
  8. Singularity Principle - Released 15 Nov 2013 imdb link.

I would estimate that 90% of the SciFi movies due to be released in 2013 were not released.  My next list of the SciFi movies for 2014 will only contain those movies I want to see based on their description because I realize now that listing the hundreds of movies is a waste of time.

The Baddest Moments of Breaking Bad Season 4

Episode 4 - Hank reads in Gale's notebook "To W. W. MY STAR, MY PERFECT SILENCE".  He asks Walt who W. W. can be?  Woodrow Wilson?  Willy Wonka?  Walter White?  Walt laughs and puts up his hands "You got me!"

Episode 10 - Jesse, Mike and Gust meet with the cartel (Don Eladio) in Mexico to poison them with Zifro Anejo.  Gus, Don and associates drink it.  The effect takes 15 minutes to notice.  Gus goes to the bathroom and vomits while the cartel start passing out.  Don't security guard moves toward Don to help him but Mike puts a wire around his neck and chokes him to death.  Don sees that Gus is not struggling and lunges at him with his last bit of energy and falls into the pool and drowns.  Jesse had no idea this would happen.  He thought they were passing him off to the cartel to cook meth but Mike assured him that either they all go home or none of them go home.  Gus grabs and gun and advises Jesse to do the same. Gus yells toward the house that everyone is dead and to grab what ever they can and leave ... or fight and die.  Servants and girls run from the house carrying money and valuables. Gus begins to stumble from some of the poison in his system and Mike and Jesse help him to the front where Jesse searches to find a car with keys.  Mike and Jesse are putting Gus into the back seat when a shot rings out and Mike is hit.  Jesse immediately starts firing back and gets the shooter then helps Mike in the car and drives away.

Episode 12 - Walt is sitting in the back yard spinning his gun on the glass table. Twice it stops pointing at him and the third time it stop pointing at the plant Lily of the Valley which he will use to poison Brock in order to turn Jesse against Gus because Gus is trying to turn Jesse against Walt.  Jesse visits Saul and Huell switches his pack of cigarettes with the ricin with an identical pack without the ricin. Walt wants Jesse to think that Gus had Tyrus switch the packs in the lab so Tyrus could poison brock. It's quite genius.  Andrea calls Jesse and tells him that Brock is sick and Jesse realizes the symptoms are identical to the symptoms caused by ricin. Jesse checks his pack and sees the ricin is missing. He tells Andrea to let the doctors know it is ricin then he threatens Walt with death but Walt convinces his that Gus did it.

Season 4 Episode 13 - Gus goes to kill Tio for talking to the DEA but what he doesn't know is that Tio told them nothing. Tio visited the DEA to bait Gus so he could kill him with the suicide pipe bomb that Walt strapped under his wheel chair and wired to his bell. Gus likes to torture Tio whenever he can for example stopping by to say that he killed his cousins and nephew leaving Don's necklace as proof.  Tio hates Walt but he hates Gus even more. Gus is angry with Tio because Tio killed is close friend and meth cook. Gus and Tyrus visit Tio to inject him with poison but Tio sets off the bomb killing all of them.  Walt rescues Jesse from the lab and they burn the lab.
